Introduction

When we think about deforestation, we think jungles in Mexico and the Amazons. But there is deforestation here in North America too. Deforestation is when people remove large amounts of trees to clear the area and use it for pastures, urban use etc.... It can also be when large amounts of trees are removed to be used, for making houses, funiture, paper and lots of other things.

We use trees to make everyday things, such as: cough syrup, baseball bats, bandage strips, crayons, candles, clothing shampoo, sponges, milk cartons, tires, paint, gum and much more. But that's not all. As we have learned in the third grade, trees provide us with oxygen by taking in our carbon dioxide. Without trees, humans wouldn't be alive.

Despite how useful trees are, people are still getting rid of trees. Here are some facts:  Forests cover 30% of earth's land but it is estimated that in a hundred years there will be no rainforests. One and a half acres of forest is being cut down every second. And every minute deforestation equals to loss of twenty football fields. Up to 28 000 species are expected to become extinct by the next quarter of the century due to deforestation. And more than 1.6 billion people worldwide rely on forests for all or part of their livehoods. As you can see, forests play a big part in our lives.
